Economics

A subject where the content is manageable and the marks are lost on technique — diagrams, definitions and the evaluation sentence most candidates never write.

The exam

What 0455 covers

The syllabus moves from the basic economic problem and how resources are allocated, through the decisions made by households, firms and workers, into the government's management of the economy, and finally to development, trade and globalisation.

None of it is conceptually difficult on its own. The difficulty is cumulative: students who never firmly learn opportunity cost in the first weeks are still paying for it when they meet exchange rates a year later.

The other trap is language. Economics has a precise vocabulary, and examiners mark against it. Writing that prices went up when the answer required an explanation of demand-pull inflation costs marks that felt earned.

Assessment

How it is assessed

  • Multiple choice — a full paper of them, and a genuine source of marks for students who drill them.
  • Structured questions — the larger component, built around data and short case material, with mark allocations that tell you exactly how much to write.
  • Command words decide everything. Identify, explain, analyse and discuss ask for four different answers to the same content.
  • Diagrams must be labelled fully — axes, curves, equilibrium points and the direction of any shift. Unlabelled diagrams earn nothing.

Suitability

Who it suits

  • You are curious about why prices, wages and government decisions behave the way they do.
  • You can write a clear paragraph — this is a written subject, not a numerical one.
  • You are considering business, finance, accounting, public policy or law later.
  • You want a subject that pairs naturally with Business Studies and Mathematics.

Progression

Where it leads

0455 is the standard foundation for A Level or pre-university Economics, and it makes first-year university modules in business, finance and accounting substantially easier.

It is not usually a formal entry requirement for an economics degree — mathematics normally is — but arriving without it means learning the vocabulary and the diagrams while everyone else is building on them.

It also carries into subjects that never mention economics by name: policy, development studies, international relations and law all assume some of this reasoning.

Our teaching

How we teach it

  • Diagram-first teaching, because a correct diagram often carries the analysis marks on its own.
  • Command-word training so you write the answer the question actually asked for.
  • Evaluation practice — the sentence that weighs one side against the other, which is where most lost marks sit.
  • Past-paper multiple choice by topic, so weak areas surface before the exam does.
